Good news for Oceania soccer -Solomon Islands.

CLUBS competing in the region’s top soccer league, the O’ League will as of next year no longer go through the elimination process.

They will also benefit from the Oceania Football Confederation’s (OFC) “Win in Oceania Financing Programme”.

These were agreed to during a recent OFC Competition Committee meeting in Auckland, New Zealand.

FIFA through OFC’s ‘Win in Oceania financing programme’ will provide funds for OFC members to boost and improve their national soccer leagues.
The committee also agreed to reformat the O League participants to eight countries. Only six countries are currently competing in the competition.

FIFA want to see that the leagues in each country meet the highest standard of excellence in football.

And during O League matches as of next year, OFC committee have approved they will meet part of the costs such as airfares of the O-League teams and referees airfares.

The hosting association will also share the cost while the visiting teams will meet their own costs of accommodation and food.

Other issues agreed to were:

Fiji and New Zealand will be the only venues to host the FIFA Oceania sanctioned matches in men’s U-17, 20, 23 and women’s Under-17, 20 and 23.
Fiji will be the home of Oceania Futsal tournaments and Tahiti will become the venue of the FIFA Beach Soccer tournament.

Solomon Islands were not a member of the OFC competition committee.

Caucau a deadly finisher

RUPENI Caucaunibuca's deadly finishing is what can raise Fiji's chances of a successful defence of Melrose Cup at the Rugby World Cup 7s at The Sevens in Dubai from March 5 to 7 next year.

So says Reverend Joji Rinakama, who will be part of the coaching panel in a mentoring role for the Waisale Serevi coached Fiji team to the RWC 7s.

But the lines were clear because all overseas-based players were selected according to a criteria set for them and Caucau included will have to meet these fitness and other standards like all other players.

The padre who raised his profile as a top coach at provincial level and instrumental in the strong bonding of the Fiji 15s team at the 2007 RWC in France believes Caucau is still the best wing because of his strong finishing.

"We need Caucau, we need a finisher but the selection criteria are simple and very clear," Rev Rinakama said.

"The national team's chances to defend the World Cup with some top names is high and possible.

"Everything is possible. We just have to choose the right players and make them fit for the game."

"I think the overseas-based players chosen to prepare for the defence of the Melrose Cup are not new to the sevens code. Players like Delasau and others have a lot of experience and knowledge to approach the shortened game.

"The only thing we need to do is lift their fitness, endurance, etc and set a proper game plan which all of them can fit in."

Rinakama said he was ready to contribute positively as the team's technical advisor.

"I was looking forward for my appointment. It's the national team, our team and our vanua."

He said there were some areas he had identified in the Fijian armoury that needs to be patched.

"I think we need to sit down with the management, Wai (Serevi) and selectors to sort out ways to help the team and prepare the boys for the World Cup sevens," he said.

"There are some technical areas and in the spiritual department that needs improvement.

"Also important to address is the player's attitude is another area to be looked into."

Rinakama supported public calls to give the 7s maestro another chance to prove his worth once again as a player.

"We cannot rely on him (Serevi) forever.

"We have to look for another one like him.

"He can play but not in a long run and also his contract clearly states he cannot do so."
